Abstract
1460649 Sunscreening compositions GILLETTE CO 24 Sept 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 48508/74 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] A sunscreen composition for application to the skin comprises a solution of a modified polyvinyl butyral which contains a major proportion of acetal units and a minor proportion of units of formula (I): in which R is hydrogen or methyl, in a volatile organic solvent which is physiologically acceptable for application to the skin. The polymer, which is obtained by esterifying polyvinyl butyral (see Division C3) suitably consists of 71-83% of acetal units, 2-27% of units of formula I, 0-5% of acetylated vinyl alcohol units, and the remainder, if any, being vinyl alcohol units. The solvent may be ethanol or aqueous ethanol, and the composition may be applied by spraying from a conventional aerosol dispenser in admixture with a suitable propellant, or used as a lotion. Conventional additives such as perfumes, colouring materials and evaporation retarders may be present in the compositions.
