Abstract

1460456 Modified butadiene polymers NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 14 Dec 1973 [7 Dec 1973] 36700/76 Divided out of 1460452 Heading C3P Butadiene polymers of number average molecular weight 200-10,000, which are either homopolymers or copolymers with another conjugated diene or a vinyl aromatic monomer, are reacted with an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid compound in the presence of a naphthol compound of formula in which R 1 and R 2 are each H, C 1-20 alkyl, nitro, hydroxy or amino, at least one of them being nitro, hydroxy or amino, n is 1-3, and m is 1-4. The added compound acts as a gelation inhibitor. In examples, the polymer is liquid 1,2-polybutadiene or a linseed oil-modified polybutadiene, the reactant is maleic anhydride, and the gelation inhibitor is 1,3-, 1,4- or 1,5- dihydroxynaphthalene, 1 - hydroxy - 2 - aminonaphthalene, 1 - nitro - 2 - hydroxynaphthalene or a mixture of 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene with 1-hydroxy-4-nitronaphthalene.
