Abstract

1460452 Modified butadiene polymers NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 14 Dec 1973 [16 Dec 1972] 58169/73 Heading C3P Butadiene polymers of number average molecular weight 200-10,000, which are either homopolymers or copolymers with another conjugated diene or a vinyl aromatic monomer, are reacted with an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid compound in the presence of a p-phenylenediamine compound of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 each represent a mono- or poly-cyclic aromatic radical or a C 1-20 saturated hydrocarbon radical, and R 3 represents H or a C 1-20 saturated hydrocarbon radical. The added compound acts as a gelation inhibitor. In examples, the polymer is liquid 1,2- or 1,4- polybutadiene, the reactant is maleic anhydride, and the gelation inhibitor is N,N<SP>1</SP>-diphenyl-pphenylenediamine, N,N<SP>1</SP> - disecbutyl - pphenylenediamine or N-phenyl-N<SP>1</SP>-isopropyl-pphenylenediamine.
