Abstract
1460358 Making moulds for reflectors BEATRICE FOODS CO 18 April 1974 [30 April 1973 19 Feb 1974] 17093/74 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions E1 and G5] An apparatus and method for providing a light flashing effect on a bicycle, for example, uses a generally flattened plastics retroreflective reflector such as 35, Fig. 2, which includes a central zone 42 retroreflecting light incident at from 0 to 30 degrees to the normal, and outer zones 43, 44 which retroreflect light incidents at from 20 to 70 degrees to the normal from either side of the reflector. The central and outer zones may be subdivided as for example in halves and quadrants respectively. The preferred directions of retroreflection provide a flashing effect when the reflector is mounted on a rotating bicycle wheel. The mounting may be effected by clips, Fig. 7, or snap fasteners, Fig. 20. The front face of the reflector is smooth and the rear face is faceted to provide the required selective reflection qualities. In manufacturing the reflectors a mould for the plastics material is made by clamping together a plurality of hexagonally shaped stainless steel pins into a bundle to form a master element. Nickel is electrodeposited on the ends of the pins to form a mould, the nickel being easily removable from the stainless steel.
