1460326 Felting apparatus; collecting fibres V S E S PROEKTNO - MONTAZHNAYA KONSTRUKT KONTORA "SOJUZVAL MASHPROEKT" 3 Oct 1974 42864/74 Headings DIN and D1R In an apparatus for producing partly finished felt buffs, wool fibres optionally mixed with other fibres are carded at 4, blown along duct 1 by blower 3 to one of the cyclones 11, some air is removed at 13, the rest carries the fibres to the bent end 17 of pipe 14 and hence deposites them on a perforated sheet 16 acting as a detachable bottom wall to moulding cylinder 15. Water is sprayed onto the fibres by annular pipe 23 to reduce the height of the mass of fibres collected in cylinder 15. Valve 10 is moved to direct the fibre-carrying air stream to the other cyclone 11 with its associated moulding cylinder 15 whilst the cylinder 15 containing fibres and its bottom wall 16 are rotated about axle 73, Fig. 7, to a position above a compacting chamber 31, Fig. 3. Bottom wall 16 is then returned to its position underneath cyclone 11 and pipe 14 that are not in use. Circular felting plate 32 is then lowered to push the fibres from cylinder 15 to cylinder 31 whose bottom surface is a second circular felting plate 33 which is raised to compress the fibres between the plates. The plates are heated by steam and perforated to allow steam to contact the fibres. Each plate undergoes oscillations involving rotation through less than 360‹ by means of drawbars 59, 65. When the fibres have been felted plate 32 is raised, cylinder 15 is returned to its position under the unused cyclone 11 and pipe 14, plate 33 is raised to expel the partly finished fibre buff from compacting chamber 31, valve 10 is moved to direct the fibre carrying air stream to the empty cylinder 15 and a new cycle commences. As described the felting action of the plates 32, 33 is incomplete at the centre of the cylinder since the centre of each plate is stationary during the oscillation. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 the lower plate 33 is made up of two parts, a perforated disk 67 vertically displaceable by piston rod 48 within hollow outer part 68 which is oscillated by eccentric shafts 70.
