Abstract

815,630. Moulding garments from d ispersions of fibres. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1956 [Nov. 30, 1955], No. 31708/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VII] Garments e.g. aprons, jackets, trousers are formed by dispersing fibres 11 in a gas, e.g. air-stream provided by a blower 12. Some of the fibres may be formed within the chamber by extruding a fibre forming liquid through a tube 13. The fibres are collected on a porous mould 18 which may be impervious in parts e.g. 19 and 20 which may correspond to the arm and neck holes of a garment. The air is removed through a duct 21. The layer of fibres may be sprayed with a binding agent e.g. rubber latex or a, solution of a vinyl resin, through atomizers 24. When the fibres include thermoplastic fibres, they may be softened by introducing hot gas or steam through the atomizers 24 to cause the fibres to become tacky. The fibres are then set by introducing cold air. When the fibres are made adhesive by a solvent, vapours of the solvent are supplied through the atomizers 24, followed by flushing with air to reset the fibres. The mould is then removed, and the garment stripped from the mould. In a modification, Fig. 3, fibres are formed by forcing a fibre forming liquid through orifices in a rotating disc 32 and the fibres are collected on a muold 34 having a porous shell 37. Reinforcing fabric may be introduced into the garment by stopping the collecting of the fibres, laying the reinforcing fabric over the collected fibres, and then continuing the collection of the fibres. Regenerated cellulose or asbestos fibres may be used. The garment may be reinforced or covered with a synthetic resin sheet.
