Abstract

1460181 Spray producers STERN FRERES SA 18 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 27047/74 Heading B2F A mist generator, for humidifying air, comprises a vessel 7 charged with liquid to a predetermined level L, the liquid level being maintained by means of an inverted bottle feeder 1-5 and liquid being supplied to the vessel via a conduit 6, a piezoelectric transducer 8 fed with ultrasonic alternating current from a source S controlled by a controller 9 being focused at the liquid surface in order to produce a cloud of mist, the mist cloud being ejected through a nozzle 10 by means of the inward movement of a deflectable wall 11 in the form of an elastic membrane reciprocated by a rod 12 slidable in a fixed yoke 13. The rod 12 is urged outwardly by a spring 14, and is actuated by a pivoted rod 15 and a cam 17 carried on the shaft 18 of an electric motor 19 coupled to the controller 9. The arrangement is such that the transducer 8 is operated for a predetermined time to produce a mist cloud, and thereafter the wall 11 is deflected for a slightly greater time to expel the mist cloud through the nozzle 10. A humidistat may be coupled to the controller 9 to cycle the mist generator until the mist content of the surrounding air reaches a predetermined value. In a modification, Figure 2 (not shown), an additional cam (20) on the motor shaft 18 and a cooperating switch (21) perform the function of the controller, such an arrangement being intended for continuous operation. In the modification of Figure 3 (not shown) the sliding rod and yoke arrangement is replaced by a fast-acting solenoid (23) deflecting the wall (11') via an attached plate (24). In order to prevent the rapid action of solenoid (23) from sucking the expelled mist back into the vessel (7'), the vessel is divided by a partition (27) above the liquid level L into two compartments (25), (26), one-way flap valves (29) and (31) being provided respectively in the partition (27) and in the wall of the compartment (26) to allow ingress of air into compartment (26) on the return stroke of the solenoid and expulsion of air from compartment (26) to (25) and thence to nozzle 10 on the pumping stroke of the solenoid.
