Abstract

1460046 Dental handpieces J W COPELAND 4 June 1974 [2 July 1973] 24741/74 Heading A5R A portable dental handpiece 10, Fig. 1, comprises an, output shaft 40 connected by a speed-changing belt and pulley arrangement 48, 46, 38 to a drive shaft 36 of an electric motor 28 powered by a battery 30, the motor and the battery being contained in a hollow handle 20 having a mount 22 on one end thereof for removably mounting a dental tool 24 in operating position thereon, a coupler 76 being connectable between the output shaft 40 and a shaft 68 of the tool, and a sleeve 58 of the mount being engageable with the tool for rotatably mounting the tool on the sleeve. An induction coil 79 for recharging the battery is mounted in the handle. A control switch (75) Fig. 2, (not shown), is mounted on the handle and is operable to connect the motor and battery. The diameter of the pulley 38 on the motor shaft is less than that of pulley 46 on the output shaft so that the speed of rotation of the tool is less than that of the motor shaft; this provides a rotation speed suitable for a prophylaxis head tool. Different pulley sizes may be used to provide an increased speed of rotation of the tool over that of the motor shaft, thus being suitable for cutting and polishing tools. A second control switch (134) Fig. 5, (not shown), may be provided on an outer member (128) of the mount, a pair of contacts (152), (154) Fig. 6, (not shown), on the outer member engaging a pair of contacts (146), (148) on the handle when the outer member is mounted thereon. Alternatively, a three pulley and belt arrangement is used to effect said speed change. The battery may consist of two cells 310, 312 Fig. 18, a switch 316 being connected to cell 310 and to the motor 314 and a switch 324 being connected to cell 310, to cell 312, and to the motor in a series relation, operation of switch 316 effecting a lowspeed tool rotation of the tool and switch 324 effecting a high-speed tool rotation. Instead of an induction coil recharging apparatus, the handle may have contacts 334, 336 on its base so that the battery may be recharged on placing the handpiece in a recharging stand (268), Fig. 16, (not shown).
