Abstract

1459781 Prilling FISONS Ltd 7 Jan 1974 [9 Feb 1973 18 April 1973] 6592/73 and 18609/73 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C1 and C2] Molten material such as sulphur, urea, NPK fertilizer or an alkali-metal hydroxide is prilled by causing droplets of the material to travel against a counter-current of drops of material which volatalises on contact with the molten material suspended in a gas stream saturated with respect to the volatile material so that at least the surface of the drops solidifies before collection. Droplets, formed by flowing through a perforated plate, by spraying or by a spinning basket fall down a tower into which is upwardly sprayed water or a low boiling point alcohol, ketone or halogenated hydrocarbon. Air, N 2 or CO 2 is fed into the spray or down into the tower by the upcurrent. Tangential sprays may cause swirling of the upcurrent. Material for incorporation in the molten droplets may be dissolved in the volatile material. After falling through a portion of the tower free from drops of volatile material, so that excess volatile material may evaporate, the droplets are collected in a liquid or fluidized bed of material which forms a coating on the droplets, or in the liquid forming the volatile drops, or in a solvent which removes excess of the volatile material.
