Abstract

1,189,543. Spray-drying. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 9 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 32619/68. Heading B1B. [Also in Divisions C5] A countercurrent spray drying process for producing a particulate product substantially free from fines and agglomeration comprises: (1) forming a first stream of liquid mixture which is dryable to form solid particles; (2) passing this stream to a point of entry in an upper portion of a drying tower; (3) forming a second similarly dryable liquid mixture and passing it to a point of entry in a lower portion of the tower; (4) simultaneously spraying the two streams downwardly from their points of entry into an upwardly flowing stream of drying gas whereby the spray droplets are dried to solid particles; (5) removing the dried mixture of discrete particles from the tower. The respective feed streams may be differently coloured to give a multicoloured product e.g. a detergent composition; first stream preferably forms the major proportion of the final product and is sprayed in finer droplets, e.g. from a smaller spray nozzle under greater pressure, to provide smaller particles than those from the second stream. The lower point of entry is 15-60% below the upper entry (based on the distance of the latter from the base of the tower) preferably 25%. The drying gas stream carries the fines out of the top of the spray tower to a recovery system, where the usable portion may be re-cycled.
