Abstract
1459634 Continuous casting KAISER ALUMINIUM & CHEMICAL CORP 17 April 1974 16821/74 Heading B3F Light metals such as Al are cast in a waterjacketed mould 12 initially closed at the bottom by a starter block 13 supported for limited horizontal sliding on a member 14 on which it is loosely locked, e.g. by ring sectors 17 secured to the block, so that as the block 13 is raised into position in the mould 12 or when withdrawn from it during casting, the block is aligned by guides, e.g. buttons 19 or rollers or a ridge on the sectors 17, riding on surfaces 20. In a modification there are spring-loaded latches (30) pivoted on ring sectors 17 or on the starter block 13 to grip the bottom rim of the cast ingot until it is lowered from the mould 12. The ingots need not be of circular section. The starter block assembly may be of Al or low carbon steel. The withdrawal table 16 is hydraulically raised and lowered and may support a number of starter blocks in a number of moulds.
