Abstract
1474590 Ingot-casting machines; moulds; casting processes GRANGES ENG AB 20 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 55162/74 Heading B3F In the casting of ingots 17 in a succession of moulds while in a vertical position 15 with the heavy end upwards, the metal is allowed to partially solidify before being step-wise conveyed on a (turntable) conveyer 10 to an interim position 12 or 13 where the mould is placed with the heavy end lower than the lighter end so that the solidified ingot 17, released from the mould by contraction, is allowed to be partly slid from the mould, to be held by a stop 19 in the form of a stirrup 18, 19 pivoted to supports 11 for the trunnions of the moulds. The stirrup 18, 19 is maintained at a constant position relative to the mould by means of a rod 20 running in a guide 21 having rails 35, 36 concentric with the conveyer 10. A further guide in the form of a rotatably mounted roller 22 arranged adjacent a discharge shoot 16, and the guide 35, 36 is so arranged that when the ingot 17 is advanced to the discharge shoot, the end face 38 of the ingot contacts the roller 22 and pushes the ingot 17 back into the mould, thus permitting the stirrup 18, 19 to disengage from the ingot by the movement of rod 20 due to the bend 37 in the guides 35, 36, and permitting the ingot 17 to slide into the shoot 16. A tilting table 24 receives the ingot 17, and tips it on to a conveyer 25, along which it travels to a turntable 26, which turns alternate ingots through 180 degrees to compensate for conicity prior to placing them on a cooling bed. The heavy end of the mould has recesses which form abutment surfaces on the ingots 17, to facilitate the release of the ingots from the mould during solidification by providing reaction supports during contraction.
