Abstract

1459541 Tube expanders DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc 9 July 1974 [25 July 1973] 30436/74 Heading B3J Adjoining sections of a tube are expanded in steps by a motor-driven rotatable expander on which there is a stop-collar for locating the expander in the tube, control means re-positioning the collar between steps to increase the penetration. As shown, Fig. 9, a stop-coller comprising a contact element 40, a bearing housing 60 and a clutch 70, 81 is mounted on a rotatable roller-cage 27, the clutch element being biased by a spring 76 to cam balls 81 into one of a series of location grooves 28 in the cage 27. Retraction of the element 40 over the housing 60 upon application of the expander against a tube 31 or header 32 operates a start valve (108), Fig. 6 (not shown). The stop-collar is moved away from the rollers 33 to the next groove 28 by a bracket 83 operated by a step bar 38, Fig. 5, which is balanced by a guide bar 88 on the other side of the cage 27. The stepping bar 38 has grooves 39 corresponding to grooves 28 in the cage 27 and is retracted in steps by a pneumatic cylinder 25. This is connected to the bar 38 during retraction steps but released during return steps by a latch 36, Fig. 11, which is operated pneumatically and has an abutment 99 for engaging the grooves 39. At the end of a rolling step a pneumatic motor rotating the mandrel 30 is de-energized by a torque control and run in reverse. The latch abutment 99 engages a groove 39 and the stepping bar is moved to declutch the clutch 71, 81 and reengage it in the next groove 28. The apparatus is then advanced by a bias or an operator further into the tube to again operate the start element 40. In another form, Fig. 3, two expanders are operated simultaneously by a central stepping bar, the unit being adjustably mounted by screws 22, 23. A lever 268 may hold the elements 71 in declutched position for manual reset after the last step. Pneumatic circuits are described which include a completion valve preventing re-rolling of the last step.
