Abstract

1459434 Electric motors SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 16569/73 Heading H2A In an electric stepping motor having a p.m. rotor and a detent element arranged to hold the rotor stationary between pulses of the current fed to the stator coils, the detent element is located within the radius of sweep of the rotor about the rotor axis. The planar air gap motor shown is intended for use in a watch and includes axially magnetized bar magnets 10 on both axial sides of four stator coils 7, the coils being adhesively secured to plastics blocks 12 bolted to a brass base-plate 4. The detent element comprises a stainless steel strip 19 secured to one of the coils. The rotor drives output gearing 20. The location of strip 19 and its low permeability prevent magnetization of the strip by an external field, e.g. the earth's field, and thus ensure reliable detent action without interference with the stepping movement of the rotor.
