Abstract

1459295 Seaming non-metallic sheet material WELTON BAG CO Ltd 19 Feb 1974 7445/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] A bacteria-resistant seal is made in a bag of non-thermoplastic sheet material, e.g. of paper, by coating at least one region of the bag or bag blank with an electromagnetic radiationactivatable adhesive and applying electromagnetic radiation to effect sealing, at least a portion of the inner surface of the bag thus made not being coated with the adhesive. The electromagnetic radiation may be radio frequency emission or microwave radiation. The adhesive may contain sensitizers appropriate to the type of radiation employed, e.g. a small amount of ionic materials. A number of bags or bag blanks may be stacked and the radiation is applied to the stack to effect the seal in each member of the stack. As shown, the lower portion of a sterilization bag used for packaging surgical and medical goods is folded and sealed by a conventional glued join 2 and a longitudinal glued join 3 is also provided. A second bottom seal 4 is made by applying a continuous band of radio frequency sensitive adhesive across the bag blank and applying radio frequency emission to this region when the bag has been formed. In a region 5, adjacent the bag mouth 6, around the inner surface of the bag, there is provided a heat seal coating which, preferably, is also sensitive to radio frequency radiation so that the closure seal can be effected either by heat sealing apparatus or by radio frequency emission.
