Abstract

1458782 Epoxidized asphalt M FUJITA 26 March 1975 [29 March 1974 11 May 1974] 12716/75 Heading C3B [Also in Divisions C4-C5] An epoxy group containing asphalt is obtained by reacting asphalt in a solvent with a chlorinating agent and oxygen or a free oxygen containing gas. The asphalt may be first reacted with the chlorinating agent, e.g. gaseous Cl 2 or a phosphorus chloride or oxychloride to obtain a chlorine content of 40-70%. Alternatively, the chlorinating agent and the oxygen or oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, may be simultaneously introduced, the oxygen preferably being in excess. The starting material may be straight or blown asphalt. The solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon. Alternatively, an unsaturated solvent may be used which is itself epoxidized in the reaction. The products may be cured by conventional epoxy resin curing agents. Uses.-Protective coatings.
