1458407 Vending machines M GROSSE 30 Jan 1975 [30 Jan 1974] 04422/74 Heading A4T A machine for dispensing newspapers or like articles comprises a casing 1 in which a platform 3 and carriage 9 are independently movable along parallel guide rails 2 (only one shown), a stack of newspapers 12 in use of the machine being located on the platform 3 and a dispensing means 11 comprising arm 13, 14 removes the top newspaper from the stack 12 at each dispensing action and moves it in the direction of the arrow X through a mouth 24 at which a person can then manually remove the newspaper, the platform 3 being supported by a framework 4 having rollers 5 which move along the rails 2 and a tension spring 6 is anchored at 7 to each rail 2 and at 8 to the platform 3 so that as the newspapers are dispensed from the stack 12 the platform 3, framework 4, stack 12 and carriage 9 along with the dispensing means 11 are moved upwardly by the springs 6 to maintain the top of the stack 12 at substantially the same level. In order to obtain a newspaper from the machine a coin or coins is/are inserted into a coin accepting mechanism 25, the coin(s) passing along a shoot 26 to a mechanism 22 having a handle 23 which is then freed for manual rotation, the handle 23 being connected by a Bowden cable 27 to the arm 14 of the dispensing means 11. The arm 13 is pivotally attached to the carriage 9 at one end and to the arm 14 at its outer end, the latter having a shaft (16), on which toothed wheels 17 are mounted, located at its lower end, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a spring 20 biases the arm 13 downwardly while a spring 21 biases the arm 14 upwardly, and when the handle 23 is manually rotated the core of the cable 27 is retracted into its sheath thereby causing movement of the arms 13, 14 to their positions shown in phantom such that the wheels 17, which are prevented from clockwise rotation by a pawl and ratchet mechanism (19), cause the top newspaper to slide in the direction of the arrow X, while a bracket 33 on the carriage 9 engages the top of the remaining stack to prevent a further newspaper being dispensed. When a newspaper has been dispensed the handle 23 is returned either manually or by spring action to its original position such that the core of the cable 27 is extended from its sheath to return the arms 13, 14 back to their original (solid line) positions, the wheels 17 being able to rotate anti-clockwise along the top of the stack 12 during such return movement. The carriage 9 is attached to the rails 2 by means of rollers 10. When all the newspapers have been dispensed a member, which was located below the stack 12 and is located at the end of the core of a Bowden cable 29, protrudes out of the cable 29 to cause the coin-accepting slots of the mechanism 25 to be rendered inoperable. The casing 1 may be incorporated in the facade or hollow wall of a building.
