1458390 Radioactive decontamination PENNWALT CORP 20 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 21883/76 Divided out of 1458389 Heading G6R [Also in Division B1] A plant for removing radioactively contaminated gas from the housing of a nuclear reactor comprises one or two trains connectible to the housing, suction means for drawing gas from the housing, and means for sensing the radioactivity level in the housing and for automatically activating the suction means to withdraw gas from the housing through the or one of the trains when the radioactivity level in the housing exceeds a predetermined value, the or each train comprising in series a demister for removing water droplets from the gas, an electric heater for reducing the relative humidity of the gas (e.g. to below 70%), a first filter capable of removing solid particles in excess of 0À3 microns from the gas, a charcoal-filled adsorber for adsorbing radioactive material (e.g. I 2 and CH 3 I) from the gas, a second filter for removing charcoal fumes from the gas emerging from the adsorber, and a vent for discharging gas emerging from the second filter to the atmosphere. The or each train may comprise a third filter upstream of the first filter, means whereby the adsorber can be bypassed and pressure, flow-rate and temperature indicators. The adsorber may comprise spaced filter elements arranged in parallel, each element consisting of charcoal maintained between inner and outer perforated cages. The demister may comprise layers of steel mesh and glass fibre mesh; the first and second filters, sheets of glass-asbestos cloth.
