Abstract

1458091 Polyurethane-based; sealer-primer compositions PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 22 Feb 1974 [16 May 1973] 8062/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] A sealer-primer composition comprises (A) the reaction product of (1) an ungelled OH- containing urethane reaction product and (2) a polycarboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof and (B) an aminoplast resin. The polyurethane polyol (1) is suitably prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyhydric material, the major portion of which is a polyether or polyester polyol, at an NCO/OH ratio of less than 1. It is preferred to use an acid anhydride as component (2), especially maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride. Conventional aminoplast resins, which may be etherified, are used. A polymeric polyol may be incorporated in the composition, before or after reaction with the polyisocyanate. The composition is ordinarily contained in a solvent for coating on to a variety of substrates. Curing of the composition takes place by heating.
