Abstract
1457448 Powder metallurgy INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 12 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 57571/73 Heading C7D Atomized alloy powders are mechanically worked to introduce sufficient strain energy into them for them to have a Thermoplastic Physical characteristic of at least 1% before hot consolidation to form wrought bodies such as turbine discs. Suitable mechanical working is effected by milling the powder in high energy attritor mills, vibrator mills or planetary ball mills. Preferably the powder is dry milled as disclosed in U.K. Patent Specification 1265343. Milling may be effected in argon - 10% methane; N 2 or N 2 -O 2 to improve the hot workability of the alloy powders which may be Ni base superalloys containing up to 60% Cr, up to 30% Co, up to 10% Al, up to 8% Ti, up to 30% Mo, up to 25% W, up to 10% Nb, up to 10% Ta, up to 7% Zr, up to 0À5% B, up to 5% Hf, up to 2% V, up to 6% Cu, up to 5% Mn, up to 4% Si, up to 70% Fe; Co base superalloys, Ti base alloys, Zircaloy and dispersion hardened alloys containing up to 10% vol Y 2 O 3 , ThO 2 or La 2 O 3 . After milling, the powders are sheathed in a metal can and hot consolidated e.g. by forging, melting, upsetting, extrusion, or isostatic compaction.
