Abstract

1456941 Data processing system INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 20 June 1974 [13 Aug 1973] 27308/74 Heading G4A In a data processing system including a program store containing a sequence of program instructions and a plurality of functional units permitting the parallel, concurrent execution of program instructions, the instructions are transferred from the program store to an instruction store prior to their execution, each data variable used being assigned as many storage locations in the instruction store as there are points at which it is used in the transferred instruction sequence. The system includes a program store 27 storing a program of the form shown in Fig. 3 which includes a nested series of subroutines S, R, P, Q, some of which, e.g. P, and Q, have alternative forms depending on the current value of a parameter developed elsewhere. The instructions are fed by distributor 15; in the case of executable instructions in instruction store 25 to one of the processors 11, 12, 13 for execution; in the case of subroutine calls to expansion storage 34, the appropriate alternative subroutine being loaded from program store 27 to instruction store 25, and an absolute address field being generated to indicate the absolute address for each use of each variable in the subroutine from a field indicating the address of the variable relative to the start of the subroutine; or to replacement unit 38 which transfers variables to addresses in instruction store 25 for each point of their use. Each instruction has a tag indicating whether or not it is executable and processing continues until all the instructions, subroutine calls &c. and the resulting instruction sequence assembled in instruction storage 25 have been executed.
