Abstract

1456891 Absorbing liquids G A SERLACHILIS OY 30 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 04405/75 Heading C1C A method of absorbing a liquid comprises absorbing the liquid by a charred residue which has been obtained as a result of absorbing further liquid in an absorption agent comprising a phenolic foamed resin and subjecting to burning, the absorbed further liquid and phenolic foamed resin. The liquid may in particular be a water-insoluble liquid with a specific gravity of less than water e.g. oil, and this may be absorbed from the surface of water e.g. the open sea. Booms, which may be made of phenolic foamy plastics bound with metal net, may be used to contain and drive the oil. The particle size of the phenolic foamy plastics mesh may be 0À5 to 4 cm diameter, with a density of 20 to 150 kg per cubic metre. Fire inhibitors or surface active agents may be present in the phenolic foamy plastics.
