Abstract

1456845 Adjustable chair JOHN FRENCH ENG Ltd 10 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 35548/73 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] An adjustment mechanism between seat and backrest of a chair comprises a pair of telescoping tubes 16, 18 Fig. 1 each of which is secured to a chair part. A screw threaded rod 23 is engaged with a screw threaded bush 20 rigid with tube 18, and with a screw threaded bush 24 rigid with tube 16. The portion of the rod 23 engaged with bush 24 has two chordal diametrally opposite parallel flats 23a, and the bush 24 has corresponding grooves such that in one angular position the bush may slide along the rod without engagement. If the rod is rotated by 90 degrees with respect to the bush from said one angular position the threads become fully engaged to lock the bush axially on to the rod. A spring 28 biases the telescopic assembly of tubes 16, 18 to their most extended condition. As shown in Fig. 1 the telescopic adjustment device acts between a seat portion 10 and a pivotable backrest support 13 to set the backrest position.
