Abstract
145,679. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., (Assignees of Harsel, W. B., and Nall, E .A.). Nov. 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Tyres, elastic, special apparatus for making.- Relates to a machine of the kind described in Specifications 120,563 and 120,564 for building-up the fabric foundation of a tyre cover. The present Invention comprises means for rotating the mandrel (2) at high or low speed and for stopping same in any position or after a predetermined portion of a revolution. To provide for rotating the mandrel-shaft 13 at variable speeds, the latter carries gears 16, 17 in mesh with gears 37, 36 on the countershafts 31, 30 respectively. Each of these shafts is in two parts connected by magnetic clutches 39, 38. To stop the shaft 13 at any instant, each clutch is fitted with a band-brake 225 the ends of which are connected to a weighted lever 226 tending normally to apply the brake. The free end of each lever is supported by the core of a solenoid 227 (in the corresponding clutchcircuit) and is raised, when the core is energized, to release the brake. To prevent shocks, a friction-drive is fitted between the sprocket 36 and shaft 30 of the high-speed gear. To facilitate the application of a single ply of fabric, means (see Figs. 6 and 7) are provided for transmitting one revolution to the mandrel comprising, a solenoidclutch, the solenoid 232 being carried by the end of the mandrel-shaft 13, and the disk 233 by a boss 235 on a co-axial shaft 234. The solenoid is in the circuit of the low-speed shaft-controls 39, 227 which also includes a make-and-break 241, 245. The latter is opened after one revolution of the shaft 13 by the engagement of an adjustable stop 248 on the disk 233 with a trip-arm 244 on the spindle of the switch-tinker 245. The circuit being thus broken, the disk 233 is reversed' by the spring 238 unwinding the band 236, and is stopped by the abutment of a projection 249 with a fixed bracket 250. In a modification of the driving- gear, the countershafts 30, 31 are omitted, the mandrel-shaft being alined with the main (variable-speed) driving-shaft and adapted to be operated through a solenoid-clutch with electricallycontrolled stop-mechanism similar to the brake 225. A treadle-operated switch is provided for freeing the mandrel for hand-rotation.
