Abstract

145,676. Siemens - Schuckertwerke. Aug. 13, 1915, [Convention date]. Low - pressure metallic-vapour apparatus ; vacuum tubes.-A rectifier, such as a mercury or other metal vapour rectifier, has solid annular anodes 1, 2, 3 arranged around a common axis. An annular cathode may be used, the diameter of which is greater than that of the outer anode 1. The periphery of the section of the anodes is preferably inversely proportional to the diameter of the anode rings. The mercury cathode vessel 21 may be tapered towards the top to form a neck, and provided at this part with heat-insulating material. The anodes are enclosed in tubular walls 10, 11, 12, the space between the outer wall 10 and a liquid-cooled casing 13 acting as the main condensation space for the cathode vapours. The arc is caused to rotate by means of an electro-magnet 18 secured by a plate 19, and having an annular pole 20 and a conical pole 17 covered by a conical insulating-cap 23, which, in a modification, is formed as a hollow liquid-cooled vessel having annular rings projecting between the walls 10 &c. to prevent cathode vapours passing to the anode spaces. The cathodes may consist of concentric rings or part rings, or may be diskshaped. The anodes may be mounted on hollow leads 7 through which cooling-liquid is supplied, the leads being insulated from the cover 6, or the cover may be made in sections of conducting material insulated from each other. The walls 10 &c. may be secured to the cover by flanges 37. In a modification, the flanges interlock, and are insulated from each other and from the cover. In another arrangement, the walls 11, 12 are supported at the bottom by lugs resting on a circular flange in a resilient manner on the casing 13. In a further arrangement, the walls are supported on laminated springs on the cap 23, which may be divided into sections, the walls being cut away at the bottom to form arch-shaped 'openings. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of an incandescent cathode of annular or disk shape, in one or more parts, instead of a mercury cathode. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
