Abstract

1455732 Vehicle control system ENGNIS MATRA 15 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 01779/74 Heading B7N In an anti-collision system for vehicles moving on a track each vehicle in co-operation with a central control office determines its distance from the vehicle ahead and when this distance approaches the vehicles' stopping distance, the vehicle or all the vehicles are stopped. Each vehicle is provided with a detector 1 which produces a pulse every time the vehicle passes over each of a sequence of equi-spaced trackside markers. The pulses are counted in counters 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and on receipt of a synchronizing pulse sent from the control office PCC via transmitter 20 and a lineside wire and received by receiver 18, these counts representing distance travelled-are transferred to counters 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> where they are counted down to zero by clock pulse signals. Each counter 3, 3<SP>1</SP> then issues a pulse and these are checked for coincidence in unit 5 which supplies a position pulse, at a time relative to the synchronizing pulse, which is a function of distance travelled by the vehicle, and this is transmitted via transmitter 19 to the control office which on receipt of the pulse immediately retransmits it in a form which can be received on each vehicle. Thus each vehicle can generate a distance window commencing at the time of issue of its distance pulse and terminated by the first pulse to be received which is that issued by the next ahead vehicle, the window representing the distance between the vehicle and that next ahead. At the same time tachometer 10 and function generator 11 on the vehicle calculate the vehicle stopping distance represented by a pulse from generator 12 which is delayed relative to the start of the distance window by a time proportional to the stopping distance. If the pulse occurs during the duration of the window then there is no danger of collision, if it does not then emergency braking is applied.
