Abstract

1455726 Assembling ships IJSSELVEER BV 14 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 52819/73 Heading B7S A method of building a ship 2 on a slipway 1 comprises building sections of the ship 2a to 2j separately on carriages 7 which are movable along the slipway on flanged wheels 12 rolling on parallel rails 8 supported by concrete girders 3a, 3b of a track 3 on the slipway, subsequently moving the completed sections together and interconnecting them to complete the ship 2, and prior to launching of the ship, each carriage 7 being separately relieved of its load by removal of wedges 11 (Fig. 2) carrying blocks 14 on which the ship rests, the carriage then being aligned on the rails 8 and reloaded by replacement of the wedges 11, so that during launching jamming of the wheels 12 will not occur, a trigger device 9 installed beneath the bows of the ship 2 holding the ship on the slipway until the desired moment of launching. During building of the ship sections the carriages 7 supporting each section may be anchored by chains or cables as 19c, 19c<SP>1</SP> shown for the section 2c to eyes on the track 3. The section 2a shown is retained on the slipway 1 by a rod 17 attached to an eye 16 welded to the section 2a, the rod being attached to an I-section beam 18 supported by stops 6 which project at intervals from the facing sides of the beams 3a, 3b (Fig. 2). The rod 17 then anchors other slip sections assembled to the section 2a, these being moved along the track 3 by shortening or lengthening the chains or cables 19. When the ship sections have been assembled the trigger device 9 is installed beneath the bows and the rod 17 is removed. The device 9 (Fig. 4) comprises a trigger 30 which is held by a locking lever 32 in a position wherein it engages a cross pin 27 on a plate 20 welded to the bow section, the trigger 30 being mounted on a carriage 28 anchored by means of an hydraulic cylinder 36 to a girder 39 engaging stops 6k on the track 3. On launch the lever 32 is released by cam member 34 and the trigger pivots to allow the ship to move down the slipway 1. In an alternative arrangement of the device 9, a releasable pin engages a recess formed beneath the bows of the ship 2.
