Controllers.-In a regulating switch of the resistance-liquid type for motor starting, the immersion surface and the distance apart of the electrodes are varied simultaneously, by operating mechanism which both varies the immersion of one electrode and at the same time varies its distance from the fixed electrode. In the arrangement shown, the sickle-shaped movable electrode 1 is carried by a shaft 4 rotatable by the handle 5 so as to move the electrode into the resistance liquid in the vessel 3 which contains also the fixed electrode 2. The shaft carries a barrel 9 with a cam-groove 10 engaging with a stationary pin or roller 11 so that, as the shaft is rotated to immerse the electrode, it is also moved longitudinally to bring the electrode nearer to the fixed electrode. Both movements of the electrode take place simultaneously, but the mechanical means for producing them may be independent of each other. A number of cam-grooves may be provided and any one of them made effective so as to give different relations between the rotary and transverse movements of the electrode. The vessel that contains the liquid may be raised and simultaneously moved transversely to produce the same result.
