Abstract

1454574 Quenching filaments E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 18 June 1974 [18 June 1973 18 April 1974] 26983/74 Heading B5B Filaments from a spinning pack are passed successively through zones of steam, non-condensing inert gas (i.e. a gas inert to the material of the filament and which does not condense at the temperatures and pressures existing in the zone of said gas) and air immediately after leaving the spinning pack. The inert gas, preferably nitrogen, amounts to 5-20% of the total volume of the gas and air. Filaments 1 from a spinning pack 2 surrounded by a heating block 3 are extruded into a steam blanketed first zone 4 supplied with steam from 5, then cooled through a quench box 6 having a zone 9 supplied with the inert non-condensing gas through 11 and then through a zone 10 supplied with air at room temperature from 7, the air passing through a perforated metal screen, tubes which surround the bundle. In zone 10 the air is supplied at a rate equal to the rate at which quiescent air would be aspirated by the moving filaments. The quenching process decreases the need to remove oxidized polymer deposits from the spinneret face.
