1454545 Lapping MOSKOV ORDENA LENINA I ORDENA TRUDOV KRAS ZNAME VYSSHEE TEKHNICHE UCHILISCHE IMENI NE BAUMANA 23 Jan 1974 03066/74 Heading B3D A lapping machine comprises a lapping tool, a cage for receiving workpieces and having a toothed periphery, a first drive including a sun wheel geared to the toothed periphery of the cage for rotating the cage, and a second drive for imparting a secondary movement between the cage and tool whereby to provide a compound cyclic motion between the tool and cage. In one embodiment, the machine has upper and lower clamping tools 1, 2, Figs. 1 and 2, which may be rotatable or stationary and between which is a plate 5 having openings for receiving the cages 3 accommodating the workpieces 4. The plate is rotatable on an eccentric portion 7 of a central shaft 6 driven by change gearing 9 from a reversible electric motor 8. The cages 3 are toothed and mesh with a sun gear 14 which is rotatable on the eccentric portion 7 and rigid with a gear 10 meshing with a gear 11 driven by change gearing 13 from a reversible electric motor 12. The cages are thus rotated about their own axes, carried around the axis of the central shaft 6 and moved radially of the lapping plates by reason of the eccentricity of sun gear 14 which thereby effects a dressing of the tools. The radial contour of the tools may be measured and the change gears 9, 13 varied to accommodate the wear of the tools. In a modification, further gearing from the change gears 9 is connected to rotate the eccentric portion 7 about its axis. In another embodiment, dressing rings 17, Figs. 4 and 5, are mounted on a lap 16, each ring having a cage 18 carrying workpiecea 19. A weight 28 may act to press the workpieces against the lap. Each ring is formed with outer toothing engaging a pair of gears 29 in turn meshing with a sun gear 22. The gears 20 are connected by rods 21 to the axle of the sun gear 22 and by rods 25 to a joint 24 with a pull rod 26 of a pneumatic cylinder 27. The ring is also engaged by rollers 23 on a member 29 acted on by a spring 30. As the pressure in the cylinder 27 is varied, the rods act to vary the distance between the gears 20 and the radial position of the dressing ring 17.
