Abstract

1454519 Rotary sprinklers TORO CO 8 Nov 1973 [30 March 1973] 51954/73 Heading B2F A sprinkler head 10 comprises a rotary popup nozzle 26 mounted on a housing 12 for dispersing the liquid and an impeller associated with said head operatively engaging said nozzle for the rotation in response to fluid under pressure passing through the head, and sealing means including a sealing ring 36 between the housing and the nozzle for preventing fluid passing out of the head between, the nozzle and the housing, the seal provided increasing with increased fluid pressure in the housing. The impeller, enclosed by the housing 12, includes an inverted apertured cup member 61 having a generally cylindrical wall fittting into the bottom of 12 and an aperture 65 at its top closed by member 66. Wall 67 forming aperture 65 includes spaced openings 68 through which liquid exits to impinge on the inclined impeller blades 70 of a rotor 69 carried by a transmission casing 31 included in the impeller, in which is disposed means for transmitting movement of said impeller to said nozzle 26. The sealing means of said impeller includes an expansible rubber diaphragm 74 at one end and the sealing ring 36, at the end adjacent the nozzle, which has a generally upright portion (111), Fig. 8 (not shown) and a horizontal flange (112), the intersection of these portions forming a lip (113) bearing against a metallic disc 35 having an aperture 110 which sets a predetermined spray pattern of the liquid, spaces (114), (115) being formed between the lip and the ring. The sealed-off portion is filled with a lubricating medium having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the materials forming the transmitting casing, i.e. plastics and the expansion or contraction of the medium therefore displaces the diaphragm in response to varying ambient conditions. The transmission casing includes a reduction gearing system disposed in the sealed-off portion for transforming the rapid rotation of said impeller to slow rotation of said nozzle, the gearing system including centre gears 85, 97 in meshing engagement with respective sets of planetary gears 86-88, Fig. 5, (not shown). The nozzle includes a nozzle cap 23 operatively connected to said impeller and a main body 26 containing passageways 27 having orifices from which liquid is sprayed, and projections 29, 28, associated with both portions for transmitting rotation of said cap by said impeller to said main body. The main nozzle body 26 comprises an upper portion (141), Fig. 9, (not shown) and a lower portion (142). Passageways 27 are formed between these members, the interengagement of which is guided by projections (143) and apertures (144), and the portions being welded together. Openings at the bottom of the nozzle which lead to passageways 27 have a cross section which is generally trapezoidal, (139), Fig. 7, (not shown) or rectangular, (140), Fig. 13, (not shown). The sprinkler head also includes a screen 37 having openings 38 and encircling said impeller. An alternative embodiment, Figs. 10-12 (not shown) includes a disc-shaped screen filter (131) instead of screen 37. Housing 12 is coaxially mounted in an outer housing 11 and movable to a position within housing 11 from one extended from it, by means of a return spring 48, the nozzle being rotatably mounted at the upper end of the inner housing. Housing 12 is non-rotatable within screen member 37, this being ensured by splines 53 engaging notches 54 on housing 12.
