Abstract

1454370 Catalytic converter for exhaust gas; nitric oxide removal catalysts BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd and B TIGHE 14 Nov 1973 [23 Nov 1972] 54133/72 Headings B1E and B1F [Also in Division C1] The exhaust system of an internal combustion engine is provided with a catalyst for the decomposition (and reduction) of nitric oxide which comprises a carrier and a highly conjugated polymer having sites with a high concentration of free electrons. Polymers specified are polylbenzimidazoles, polypyromellitimides, polyphenylenes, polyacenequinones, polyimines, polydiphenyldiacetylenes, polymeric metal phthalocyanine complexes, polyindoloimidazoles and pyrolysed polyacrylonitrile. Catalysts exemplified are made by coating granules of alumina or silica or a ceramic honeycomb with polyacrylonitrile and pyrolysing the polymer.
