Abstract
1454342 Treating wastes or soil containing heavy metals; sequestering agents NIPPON SODA CO Ltd 29 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 04084/74 Headings C1C C1B and C1H Heavy metals or compounds thereof in a solution or slurry are rendered water-insoluble by admixing therewith from 0À1 to 50% by weight of an aliphatic dithiocarbamate compound, wherein the aliphatic chain may contain a N atom in place of a C atom, containing at least two dithiocarbamic acid groups (=N.CS.SH) or alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts or esters thereof. The mixture so-obtained may be further treated with a cement or hardenable resin to give a solid mass resistant to leaching. The dithiocarbamate compound may also be incorporated in the cement. Soil containing heavy metals or compounds thereof may also be treated as above to inactivate the metals. Specified metals are Ni, Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, Ag, Mn, Bi, V and Hg. In Examples water and mud containing Hg and mercuric compounds (from Nace electrolysis), dry sludge containing Cu and compounds thereof (electroplating waste), Cd-containing sludge and soil containing cadmium were treated.
