Abstract

1454328 Cooling materials discharged from furnaces GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP 11 June 1974 [28 June 1973] 25926/74 Heading F4B Hot, particulate material, e.g. petroleum coke, is cooled in a long, rotating, slightly inclined cylinder 1, having nozzles A for spraying water on the coke in the entry portion and a further cooling section where the outside of the cylinder is cooled by a water dip 6 and internal air is provided through pipes 8. Section 10 is divided into four compartments cooling the coke by tumbling. The temperature of the coke is measured at at least one location by thermocouples placed and connected through a central, non-rotating conduit 14 supported by a rotating hub of the cylinder, the thermocouples serving to control the supply of water to further sprays in different portions of the cylinder to ensure the coke leaving at Z shall not be above a given temperature. The dust associated with the coke is suppressed by oil spraying at 20 and the coke tumbled in the six compartments of section 11 for mixing the oil and coke. Conduit 14 houses pipes carrying water from supply pipe 46 to spray nozzles 24 and 26, as well as thermocouple lines to measuring points 25 and 27, and a pipe (18), Fig. 5 (not shown), carrying oil from supply pipe 35 to the oil spray manifold 20 (details, Fig. 4, not shown). The thermo-couple measuring point 27 regulates supply of water to main spray nozzles A and can cut in additional water supply from line B and spray nozzle 26 if the temperature of the particulate material rises above the desired level. The thermocouple measuring point 25 controls operation of a solenoid valve supplying water to spray 24 24 and also a shut down valve to oil pump 38 and shut down of the motor for driving the cylinder 1 if temperature in this area reaches a dangerous level. A further thermocouple 33 in the shoot to the conveyer controls a supply of spray water to the end of the cooler if the temperature in this area gets beyond acceptable limits and can shut down the cooler and oil supply pump if limits are exceeded. A baffle 7 deflects material as it enters the oil injection zone to prevent clogging of the oil sprayer. Diverter plates 55 assure an equal division of material to the six compartments in section 11. Hinged openings 31, 32 give access to the interior of the cooler when required. Structural designs of sections 10 and 11 can be varied to change the number and shape of the compartments, Figs. 7, 8 and 9 (not shown). In a simplified version of the apparatus, Fig. 11 (not shown) the cooling air pipes 8 and the free fall tumbling zone of section 10 in Fig. 1 are omitted. In a further, even more simplified version, Fig. 12 (not shown) the free fall tumbling zones of sections 10 and 11 of Fig. 1 are omitted as well as the oil sprays.
