Abstract
1454217 Brazing WALL COLMONOY CORP 16 Dec 1974 [14 Dec 1973] 54293/74 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions C7] In braze repairing or brazing an article or a superalloy containing 2-10% Al and/or 2- 10% Ti, the surfaces of the article are cleaned, a brazing filler metal is applied to the article, the article is placed in an enclosure containing a material having an affinity for oxygen at least equal to that of the Al and/or Ti in the article and the article is heated in a vacuum while in the enclosure. The superalloy is a Ni, Co or Cr based alloy and the articles which may be treated are gas turbine blades, combustion chamber liners, nozzles, ducts, &c. especially to repair eroded surfaces, cavities, thermal fatique cracks &c. and parts of nuclear reactors. In an embodiment a cracked jet engine part is solvent or vapour degreased and then cleaned in a hot salt bath containing 9- 15% sodium nitrate, 5-15% sodium chloride, 8-20% potassium hydroxide and 50-78% sodium hydroxide. The part is rinsed in water, pickled in dilute acid solution, water rinsed again and dried. Brazing metal, e.g. an alloy containing 19% Cr, 10.2% Si, rest Ni, in powder form mixed with a fugitive binder to form a paste is applied to the part and the part is placed on pedestals 44 of alumina in a box 34 in a furnace 10. The box which is carried on a table 30 comprises a bottom 38 and a loose, non-gas tight, lid 36 of stainless steel with an intermediate layer of alumina and an inner lining of material having a greater affinity for oxygen than Al and/or Ti, e.g. zirconium or an alloy thereof. Titanium may be employed in addition to zirconium. A hard vacuum is initially provided in the electrically heated furnace, the furnace is then filled with argon or helium and then again evacuated and a temperature of above 1800‹ F. is produced in the furnace to melt the brazing metal and held to cause diffusion thereof. In an example thermal fatigue fractured turbine vane is repaired, the vane being formed from an alloy containing 0À15% C; 15À5% Cr; 9À7% Co; 8À4% Mo; 3À6% Ti; 4À2% Al; balance Ni, and the heating for brazing and diffusion is to a temperature of 2150‹ F. held for 30 minutes.
