Abstract
1453489 Heating metal workpieces ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 9 June 1975 [7 March 1974] 10336/74 Heading B3M [Also in Division H5] Slabs, billets, or other metal workpieces moving along a path are heated by controlled switching of one or more induction heaters located along the path, so that the heat input to the workpiece varies along its length in a predetermined non-uniform manner. The figure shows reheating of a strip 11 passing from a reheating furnace to a roughing mill, or between roughing and finishing stages, on a roller table 11. Induction heaters 12 are located between the rollers 10, and are cyclically switched on and off in sequence in accordance with the location and the known or measured speed of the strip so as to compensate for sinusoidal temperature distribution along the strip caused by the supports on which the strip rests in the furnace. The heat input may also compensate for a temperature gradient along the strip. Additional inductors or lamination packs may be located above or below the strip path to modify the flux path and hence the distribution of heating. The switching may be effected by a mechanical commutator or by solid state switches. The inductors may employ U-shaped cores having a single slot between two upstanding teeth, each coil being wound with a turn extending along a slot in one core and back along a slot in an adjacent core, or E-shaped cores, each coil being wound around a central tooth. Fig. 3 shows a laminated core 13 with slots 14 in which inductors 15 are wound.
