Abstract

1453177 Rotary positive-displacement fluidmachines FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973] 38241/74 Heading F1F An apex seal for a Wankel I.C. engine comprises an elongated member 10, Fig. 1, which fits in a groove 12 of a rotary piston 14 and has at least one longitudinal slot along one side. As described, slots are provided along both sides in overlapping relation and the seal is made of graphite with an insert 34 of polyarylsulfone. The seal is sealed relative to the base of its groove 12 by a silicone sponge material. A pin 40, which engages the corner seals, prevents radial displacement. Alternatively the seal may be located by an adhesive. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), illustrate how the seal flexes in use.
