Abstract
1453117 Automatic control of particle beams VARIAN ASSOCIATES 26 Feb 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 8738/74 Heading G3R The orientation of a radiation field produced by the bombardment of a target by a charged particle beam is monitored by a pair of sensors which are responsive to changes in the position on the target at which the beam is incident and the angle of incidence at the target respectively. As shown, particles e.g. electrons from an accelerator 22 pass through beam transport 26 and a bending magnet 30 to a target 12 where X-radiation is produced. The X-rays traverse a primary collimator 14, flattening filter 16, monitoring ionization chamber 18 and movable collimator jaws 20. The chamber 18 has inner and outer quadrant electrodes, Fig. 3 (not shown), which are connected in pairs to differential amplifiers forming signals which are used to control the energization of beam alignment and position adjusting coils 24, 28 so that a desired lobe pattern of X-radiation is produced at the target 12, Fig. 2
