Abstract
1453053 Evaluating drop size information NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 29 Jan 1974 [30 Jan 1973] 4500/73 Heading G1A In a device for evaluating drop size information of a spray system 6, light from two sources 1 and 2 is alternately passed via their respective collimators 3 and 4 and a semi-reflector 5 on to the spray 6 and the radiation passing straight through (i.e. that which has not been obstructed by the particles in the spray) and the radiation scattered is received respectively by photo receptors 8 and 13, the photo receptors being in the form of a matrix of photo-detectors or a vidican tube. The outputs of the photo receptors may then be processed electrically Fig. 3 (not shown) with the aid of buffer stores and a computer to determine information about the size of particles in the spray and/or their velocity. The diffracted or scattered radiation is received as shown by a "stepped" concave mirror 11 of which each step corresponds to a different focal plane within the spray, and the light reflected by the concave mirror 11 is received by a convex mirror 12 and reflected through an aperture 14 on to the photo receptor. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 4 (not shown) the stepped concave mirror is replaced by a fresnel lens whose "ridges" perform the same function as the "steps" of the mirror. The light from the two sources can be separated from one another by colour filters or polarized filters 9. In a further embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the source 2 is removed and two powerful flash sources such as laser pumped discharge tubes are positioned directly above or below the spray.
