Abstract

1453024 Electroconductive coatings INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 Sept 1975 [23 Jan 1975] 37929/75 Heading B2E Electrophotographic elements are produced by depositing a layer of organic charge generation material on a conductive substrate, buffing the layer, and then applying an organic charge transport layer to the buffed layer. The substrate is suitably a sheet of aluminised polyethylene terephthalate. It may have a sub-layer of polyester applied before the layer of charge generation material. Typical charge generation materials are diazo pigments such as 3, 3'-dichloro - 4, 4' - diphenyl - bis - (1" - azo - 2" - hydroxy-3"-naphthanilide), cyanine pigments such as 3, 3'-diethylthiadicarbocyanine, and methyl and hydroxy squarylium pigments. They are applied in finely divided form in a suspension which may include a polyester as a binding agent. The dried layer is buffed with a rotating buffing wheel of any suitable material such as cotton, mohair, wool, chamois, suede, leather, or synthetic fibre materials. The charge transport layer is applied as a suspension or solution of the material with a binder (e.g. polycarbonate). Suitable charge transport materials are pyrazoline compounds, triphenylmethane, Schiff bases, and pigments based on acridines, azo compounds, xanthenes, fluorenones, violanthrones, indanthrones, indigoids, perylenes, mercaptocyanines, hemicyanines and pyranthrones.
