Abstract

1452988 Cutting by laser beam G STUMPF 21 May 1974 [22 May 1973] 22721/74 Heading B4B A device for cutting sheet material, e.g. foil or fabrics, by means of a thermal cutting beam i.e.: a laser beam 10, comprising a plate-like supporting means 7 having holes therethrough and arranged to support the material. The laser beam is generated by means of a gun 8 via an optical system 9 to a first mirror assembly 11 which is mounted on a carriage 2 and deflects the beams to a second mirror assembly 12 on a second carriage 4; the carriage 2 is driven by a motor 6. The supporting means 7 is in the form of a perforated plate, e.g.: of copper or brass which is mounted on supports 15, Fig. 2, adjustably secured to support bars. As shown in Fig. 2, the supports are each fitted with cowls 17 having projections 18 for fitting into respective perforations in the plate. By adjusting the supports, the laser beam can be correctly focused with respect to the material. When cutting a rigid sheet material e.g.: wood, the plate 7 and cowls 17 may be removed and the sheet of wood laid directly on the supports 15. Cutting fumes are extracted from beneath the plate by suction means.
