Abstract
1452983 Apparatus for releasing liquid from compressed air systems GRAUBREMSE GmbH 16 Jan 1974 [8 March 1973] 02133/74 Heading F4U [Also in Division F2] A valve assembly for automatically draining water from a compressed air brake system comprises a valve body having a flat plate-shaped cover 1 with screw threads 3 for attachment to the system and a valve seat 4 through which the water drains. The disposition of threads 3 is such that, when installed in the system, substantially the entire valve assembly is protected from damage. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a moulded plastics part 8 is sprung into engagement with the upstanding rim 2 of metal cover 1. Part 8 has a central extension 11 containing a filter 12 and is joined to a further plastics part 14 forming an accumulator chamber 18. In operation, compressed air and entrained water from the system enter the valve assembly through a transverse recess 15 in part 14 and through gaps between parts 8, 14 and thence flow through filter 12 into a chamber 16 which is closed by a stressed diaphragm 10 seating at 9 on part 8. When the air pressure is sufficient, diaphragm 10 unseats from the latter permitting air to fill chamber 17 and accumulator 18 connecting therewith through ducts 19. Diaphragm 10 remains urged against seat 4 by system pressure in chamber 16. Should the latter now fall, e.g. as a result of brake application, relative to the pressure in accumulator chambers 17, 18, diaphragm 10 seats at 9 but unseats from 4 permitting water trapped in chambers 17, 18 to be ejected through nozzle member 5. Seat 4 remains open until the pressure in chambers 17, 18 has fallen to that in chamber 16. To permit water drainage to be effected manually nozzle member 5 is supported in cover 1 by an elastic collar 7 so as to be movable inwardly under finger pressure to unseat sealing rim 6 on the nozzle member from cover 1. In a modification, Fig. 3, the valve assembly has a similar external configuration but contains a ring-shaped hollow float 21 which is coupled by levers 23 to a valve stem 22 passing through the centre thereof. Thus water entering at 24 causes float 21 to rise and lift stem 22 off seat 4 to permit the water to be ejected.
