Abstract

145,296. Brown, G. L. Aug. 9, 1919. Respirators.-In apparatus for use in noxious atmospheres, such as mines, in which breathing through the nose is prevented by clips, the clip has a certain freedom of movement and is protected by a guard, so that accidental blows do not reach the clip, also the mouthpiece is attached to the face by straps one of which prevents the lower jaw from opening. The mouthpiece 2; which has an inner flange 12 and an outer flange 3 between which pass the lips, and a biting plate 15, all of known type, is fitted with a guard 1 behind which is arranged a guide 4, preferably corrugated, for the transverse limb of the U-shaped nose clip 6. The guide may be double, as shown, and guide eyes 8 on a clip 9 guide the movement of the clip transversely. The clip thus has a certain amount of play, but the corrugations prevent this from being too free. The outer flange 3 of the mouthpiece is extended to form a face flange, which is secured by head straps 19, and a chin strap 18 having continuation straps 20 which pass through loops 21 on the strap 19. The chin strap prevents the lower jaw from opening. Small straps 26 connect the chin strap to the plate 3. The straps 19, 26 are connected up by key-rings 16, 17 allowing of ready disconnexion.
