Abstract

1452923 Throttle controls G J WILKES 7 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 3357/73 Heading F1B I.C. engine throttle control provides a resistance to movement of the throttle control which varies in accordance with the inlet manifold vacuum. A casing 13 is divided by a diaphragm 16 into a compartment 14 which is connected to the inlet manifold and a compartment 15 which is open to atmosphere. A rod 18 connects the diaphragm to a lever 24, pivotally mounted at 22 and connected by a chain 30 and tension spring 31 to a bell-crank 33 which is also connected to a rod 12 which reciprocates as the operators throttle control is moved. The rod 12 moves upwards as the operators control is moved in the throttle opening direction, turning the bell-crank until the chain is taut and spring 35 is extended to a degree at which the force applied to lever 20, 24 is just insufficient to move it against the combined effect of the economizer spring 25 or 28 and the inlet manifold pressure acting on the diaphragm 16. Further opening movement of the throttle requires either a substantial increase in the pressure applied by the operator or an increase in engine speed sufficient to reduce manifold pressure so as to move the diaphragm. In a first modification the economizer spring comprises a leaf-spring which engages the lever. In a second modification two links in series are inserted in the rod 12 and the shaft 18 is connected to the common articulation point of the links. In a third modification the shaft 18 is pivotally connected to one end of a lever which is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends and the other end of the lever engages the lever 12 between cheeks which allow lost-motion, the connection allowing movement of diaphragm 16 to be transmitted to rod 12 in either direction of movement.
