Abstract

1452541 Acoustic devices ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 5 Feb 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 5292/74 Heading H3U [Also in Division C7] An acoustic device, e.g. a delay line, comprises a metal alloy body which is at least 50% amorphous as measured by X-ray diffraction, the term "alloy" including mixtures of a metal with certain non-metals. The alloys used are of the general formula TiXj where T is one or more transition metals and X is one or more of aluminium, antimony, beryllium, boron, germanium, carbon, indium, phosphorus, silicon and tin and examples of preferred alloys are given. At high frequencies amorphous bodies have the advantage over polycrystalline bodies that the attenuation varies as f<SP>2</SP> rather than f<SP>4</SP>. The body may be in the form of a wire, which passes torsional waves, a strip, which passes shear waves, or be in bulk form, e.g. a rod. Piezoelectric or magnetostrictive transducers may be used. In the case of a wire, magnetostrictive delay line, a variable delay may be obtained by arranging for one of the transducers to be movable. Examples are given of methods of manufacture of acoustic devices according to the invention. A wire is produced by passing molten alloy through an orifice into brine solution at - 20‹ C. A strip is produced by passing molten alloy from a silica tube between rotating rolls at room temperature. A rod is produced by melting alloy in a silica tube and rapidly quenching it in brine solution at - 20‹ C.
