Abstract

1,125,623. Billet piercing; extruding; rolling ; drawing. SCHLOEMANN A.G. 10 Aug., 1965, No. 34215/65. Headings B3H, B3M and B3P. [Also in Division C5] In a process for deforming a metal at 600‹ C. or above, the workpiece is protected from oxidation and is lubricated during deformation by a powder mixture introduced between the workpiece and deforming tool, the mixture including a crystalline material having a space-lattice structure, and having a definite melting point which is higher than the -working temperature, the mixture being plastically deformable at the working temperature whereby it provides on the deformed workpiece a loosely adhering space-lattice crystalline oxide-resisting coating. The process may be hot extrusion, drawing, roller piercing of solid and hollow billets, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), or piercing ingots with backward extrusion, Fig. 5 (not shown). The workpiece may be pre-heated or may attain the working temperature as the result of its deformation. The mixture includes an oxide of the metal being deformed or of a metal having an affinity for oxygen at least as great as the metal being deformed. For the extrusion of steel, iron-oxide is used and may be mixed with amorphous substances such as glass powder which become liquid or viscous at the deformation temperature. The powder may also contain FeSiO 3 or FeSiO 4 .Many specific examples are given of powder mixtures for the working of various alloy steels, copper base alloys, and chromium, niobium, molybdenum, tantalum and tungsten alloys. The mixture may be applied directly such as by a blower (6), Fig. 3 (not shown), or it may be mixed with a binder such as water glass and formed into a paste or compact. In a backward extrusion and piercing operation, Fig. 5 (not shown), the billet is coated externally with the powder mixture and loose powder or a compact is applied between the punch and.workpiece. Subsequently the coating is removed from the workpiece by stretching, drawing surface heating with a gas burner or by chemical methods.
