Abstract

1452477 Hydrogen rich reducing gas URQUHART ENG CO Ltd 18 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 49784/72 Heading C5E A reducing gas mixture rich in hydrogen is produced by the partial combustion of hydrocarbon gases, e.g. natural gas, methane, propane and butane, or ammonia, or mixtures thereof, by injecting the gas to be burnt into the combustion chamber of a refractory lined combustion chamber in admixture with a substoichiometric quantity of air, directing the mixture initially along a surface of the refractory lining, burning the gas in the chamber, reversing the direction of flow in the chamber and establishing a recirculation of gases within the chamber to promote rapid admixture with the incoming gas and air mixture and create a temperature profile within the chamber which promotes combustion of the incoming gas and substantially avoids the formation of free carbon from hydrocarbon gas, and discharging the combustion products from the chamber as a reducing mixture rich in hydrogen. The gas is supplied from outside the chamber at sufficiently high velocity that it entrains the air for combustion during passage into the chamber. The air may be preheated before it is entrained. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a refractory lined, substantially cylindrical combustion chamber 1 having a front wall 2, an exit duct 6 in the front wall for discharge of combustion products from the chamber and a rear wall 4 opposed to the front wall, and a plurality of jet nozzles or burners 7 arranged in the front wall to inject into the chamber a hydrocarbon gas or ammonia or mixtures thereof in admixture with a sub-stoichiometric quantity of air such that the mixture of gas and air flows along the refractory lining towards the rear wall at sufficient velocity to entrain combustion products and establish a recirculatory flow pattern within the combustion chamber. The chamber includes an outer jacket 8 spaced from and surrounding the refractory lining 5 to constitute an air duct 9 through which the air is caused to flow to the jet nozzles 7 whereby the air is preheated. Duct 10 supplies a plurality of supply jets 11 to discharge high velocity streams of gas into jet nozzles 7 to entrain air from the duct 9 and mix therewith during passage through the nozzles into the chamber.
