Abstract
1452241 Antiskid braking systems KELSEY-HAYES CO 12 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 35487/74 Heading F2F In an antiskid braking system comprising a hydraulic circuit for operating a wheel brake and means for modifying the actuation of the brake in response to a predetermined signal to prevent a skid condition the said means includes a pump such as a power steering pump 49 for delivering fluid under pressure, a member movable by fluid from the pump and a regulator for maintaining at least a predetermined pressure in the pump output in response to pressure in the brake circuit. The regulator includes a composite plunger having plungers 71, 78, a first area being exposed to the pump pressure and a second area being exposed to the pressure in the hydraulic brake circuit, a spring 76 providing a preselected bias. As the pressure from the master cylinder to the rear brakes is increased the plunger 78 biases plunger 71 to a direction which increases the pressure in a conduit 53. Actuation of the skid control modulator 19 causes a check and bleed valve 29 to close and isolate the wheel cylinders from the master cylinder supply and an expansion chamber plunger 37 retreats to relieve braking pressure. In the event of pump failure or heating of any of conduits 53, 59 or 56 a fail-safe device 84 delivers brake fluid direct from the master cylinder to wheel cylinders, the device 84 including an isolation valve 85 carried by a plunger 86 which has a bypass valve end portion 87 controlling flow through a port 88. A visual or audible warning is energised via a switch 111. Stopping and starting of the engine causes variation of pump pressure and causes movement of plunger 77 and other parts thus ensuring that they do not stick or bind in their normal positions.
