Abstract
1452117 Power-assisted steering mechanism K H THOMAS [trading as LANGEN & CO] 18 Dec 1973 [21 Dec 1972] 58560/73 Addition to 1,439,038 Heading B7H In a power-assisted steering control unit comprising two valve pistons 8, 9 which are actuated in response to relative rotation between an input shaft 1 and output member 2 connected by a torsion bar 3 and have reaction faces or separate reaction elements located in reaction chambers 19, 20 subject to the pressures in the chambers of a servo cylinder controlled by the valve pistons, the transmission of force from the input shaft 1 to the valve pistons 8, 9 is effected through tappets 10, 11 having lost motion and through springs 15, 16 interposed between the input shaft and the valve pistons in parallel with the tappets 10, 11. The tappets 10, 11 are actuated through adjusting screws 12, 13 in a lever 14 on the input shaft 1. The springs 15, 16 may be under slight stress even when relaxed to the extent of the lost motion. In another embodiment the torsion bar 3 is replaced by a pre-stressed C-spring, the pre-stress in the spring being greater than the resistance offered by the springs 15, 16 to displacement of the valve pistons by pressure rises occuring in the reaction chambers due to external forces acting on the servo cylinder.
