Abstract

1451831 Seaming non-metallic sheet material DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 1 Feb 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 04886/74 Heading B5K Abutting sheets 1, 2 or blocks of elastically deformable thermoplastic material, e.g. foamed polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane for floor coverings, are joined along their longitudinally extending abutting lateral surfaces by separating these surfaces by a member 6 whilst the sheets are advanced through a working zone, transforming these surfaces, whilst separated, into a state in which they will be joined together when brought back into contact, and then bringing the transformed surfaces into contact with each other by at least two pressure-applying members positioned opposite each other on the sheets 1, 2 adjacent the line of join 8. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the sheets 1, 2 are delivered into and withdrawn from the apparatus by driven rollers 3, 4, respectively. Hold-down plates 5a, 5b are arranged before and after the separating member 6 which carries a heating source 7 and has a V-section with wedge surfaces 6a, 6b. The member 6 is preferably a hollow section metal member through which a coolant is circulated. The sheets are pressed together along the join 8 by members 9, Figs. 1 and 2, motor driven about inclined shafts 10, each comprising a conical surface 11 and acted on by an adjustable spring 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the member 6 has an inverted V-section with wedge surfaces 6a<SP>1</SP> and 6b<SP>1</SP> which extend upwardly from a table support 13. The heat source is shown at 7<SP>1</SP>. An insert 15 having bores 16 for the circulation of a coolant may be provided in the support 13. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the members 9 are replaced by rollers 9<SP>1</SP> parallel to the plane of the sheets 1, 2 but inclined to the seam 8. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), two motor-driven rollers 9 are provided parallel to the plane of the sheets and to the seam 8. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 6, four pressure members 9 inclined as shown are provided. In a modification, the lower members 9 are replaced by discs 9<SP>11</SP>. The heating can be produced by hot air, an open flame, an incandescent wire, or a quartz radiator. If the surfaces of the separating member are used as the heating source, then this member should preferably be coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Instead of, or in addition to the heating source an adhesive applicator may be provided. Heat may be use to melt a meltable adhesive or to evaporate a solvent.
